11+ Maths: Fractions made friendly

Fractions appear everywhere in the 11+ exam—from sharing pizzas to rebalancing ratios. Here’s how to make them feel less intimidating and more like a useful toolkit.

1. Start with visuals

Reach for fraction walls, bar models, and number lines before jumping into calculations. Ask learners to shade in 3/4 and then overlay 6/8 so equivalence becomes obvious. You can sketch these on squared paper or print from our resource pack.

2. Use the “same story” test

When adding or subtracting fractions, ask: “Are we talking about the same sized piece?” If denominators match, add or subtract the numerators. If not, find a shared story—often the lowest common multiple. Learners love writing short stories about cakes or comic books to remember which denominators to use.

3. Estimate first, calculate second

Before solving, nudge learners to estimate the answer. For 5/6 − 1/3, they might say “just over half minus a third leaves something under a quarter.” Estimation builds number sense and provides a quick check for calculator-free questions.

4. Turn word problems into ratios

Many fraction word problems can be reframed as ratios. Splitting sweets in a 3:5 ratio is the same as sharing 3/8 and 5/8. Show the connection on paper so learners can swap between representations quickly.

Keep the momentum going

  • Launch the maths missions and choose “Fractions” for fresh practice.
  • Revisit questions later the same week to reinforce mastery.
  • Celebrate small wins—a streak of three correct answers earns a silly dance or kitchen disco.

Fractions stop feeling scary when learners see them from multiple angles. Keep it playful, keep it visual, and keep revisiting the skills.
